#WCIW: Melissa McCarthy
Kick-ass Comedian. Bold Entrepreneur. Body Positive Advocate.
Melissa McCarthy, to most people, is hilarious. She’s an incredibly talented comedian who, in the past few years, has taken Hollywood by storm. She has made her mark through her hysterical roles in female-led comedies like The Heat, Bridesmaids, and Ghostbusters, as well as her memorable appearances on Saturday Night Live. Melissa McCarthy is so much more than an actress, however. She is a powerhouse: a mother, an entrepreneur, and an all-around badass.
McCarthy became a household name in 2011 after her role as Megan stole the show in Bridesmaids. The role made such an impact that she was nominated for an Oscar in 2012. Melissa’s award show excitement was soon dampened by her seemingly fruitless search for a gown. She asked six high-end designers to make her a gown, but, despite her incredible success and attention from press, no designers were willing to dress her for the event. McCarthy ended up wearing a Marina Rinaldi ready-to-wear gown to the 2012 Oscars, but an idea had hatched in her mind.
It was not just glamourous gowns that Melissa had trouble finding. Due to her size, she had difficulty finding everyday clothes, as well. In the past, she has said to The Hollywood Reporter of plus-size clothing, “Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible. It’s either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.” So, McCarthy, who majored in fashion design before her acting career, started her own clothing line, Melissa McCarthy Seven7. The line has been sold with HSN, Lane Bryant, and through their website: melissamccarthy.com
Melissa uses her clothing line and her public forum to speak out for women of all shapes and sizes. She constantly addresses sexism and sizeism in the world and in Hollywood, in particular. When a publication called her “America’s Plus-Sized Sweetheart”, she responded, “It’s like I’m managing to achieve all this success in spite of my affliction. Would you ever put that in the headline for a male star?” For her kick-ass comedy, bold entrepreneurship, and body positivity, Melissa McCarthy is this week’s #WCIW.
