SS18 Trend Report: JD’s Must-Haves

In today’s political, social, and even literal climate, the world feels like a daunting place.

This was not lost on designers in New York, London, Milan, Paris and around the world. The Spring Summer 2018 collections were a testament to the times. Some were politically and socially inspired, while others chose to seek out a sense of humor in these times. Laughing to keep from crying, if you will.

Others were inspired by the good happening in the world. Inclusive movements like Body Confidence, Gender Nonconformity, and Redefining Age hit the mainstream and this NYFW proved to be the most inclusive fashion week ever.  In the rest of the world, these ideas are still taking hold, but there is evidence that, with time and the effort of the consumer, change will come and it will be beautiful.

For now, it is becoming clear that acceptance, inclusion, and embracing differences is not a fleeting trend, but here to stay. Let us celebrate that as we examine the top 5 trends of the season that New Yorkers are finding joy in in this melancholy era.

Color Pop!

While the typical Spring fare (florals, blush, white, black, and gray) all had their moments on the runways, nothing stood out more this season that the fun, joyous, and loud POPs of color!  Building on the Primary Color trend from Resort, reds, yellows, and blues are still hot, but now every bright color — from violet to fucsia to cornflower to tangerine to fluorescent tones — the color wheel is yours to play with! Wear as solids or mix and match.

Ankles, Ahoy!

The Spring silhouette is all about ankles! From cropped, oversized trousers, to vintage-inspired cropped denim, to midi skirts and dresses, the lower leg is on full display. Pair with pointed-toe-pumps to elongate the leg, and a waist-cinching belt for the feminine hourglass shape that's also a major trend on the runways!

Heavy Metals and Diamond Crushers

The colorful 80s-inspired metallics of Resort have exploded into a supernova of shimmer, iridescence, sparkle, and metallic shine. Stand out and catch the light in sequined gowns, metallic suit jackets (in any color POP color you can think of!), and blouses and skirts with oil-slick sheens.  The louder the fabric, the better. Have fun with this one!

Femme Run A-Fowl

Spring/Summer 2018 is one of the most feminine seasons we’ve seen in awhile. While the menswear touches (oversized blazers with rolled up sleeves, menswear cut trousers, etc.) are still happening, there's an overwhelming girliness on the catwalks. From soft, supple silks to the copious and creative use of ruffles, the femme touches were plentiful and playful. One of the standout ladylike details, however, is the liberal utilization of feathers! These fluffy details, however, are far more elevated than in previous seasons.

This Bright Millennium

From the glaring logo prints to the bra tops and turtleneck sweaters, to the outrageous, brightly colored faux-fur jackets, Millennium-dressing is back with a vengeance. That’s right! Dust off your early 2000s Gucci logo jackets, your Clueless-inspired cropped fur coats in cotton candy colors, and all of your striped knits! Keep in mind, however, this trend is less Paris Hilton and more Elle Woods: Keep. It. Classy!

There’s more to see, but you have to be an insider.
