Rock the Culottes this Fall!

Just loose enough to be comfy, but still retaining enough structure to appear polished, culottes are the perfect compromise when you want the look of a skirt with the comfort of pants. Think you can't wear the culotte? Not if you look for a pair that works for your body and lifestyle!  Here are a few tips for this Fall...

Culottes NR

Just like a skirt:  Try thinking about culottes as you would an A-line skirt, when it comes to what matches well with them. For instance, a high-waist pair will look right with any shirt that falls above your hip or a tucked-in blouse, which is a killer look for your workday.

Make it monochromatic:  If you're still feeling unsure about the culottes trend and want to play it safe, there's no better way to make a quiet statement than by choosing one color, like classic black. Black culottes paired with a black slouchy (yet relatively short) sweater, heeled booties and an over-sized bag will make you look long, lean and hip to new trends.

Make it work for your body:  For those women who are on the shorter side, try rocking a monochromatic outfit. By wearing a single color from head to toe, you trick the eye into seeing your stature as taller and slimmer.  Dark wash denim culotte with an indigo denim shift, or even a black tank top and navy blazer are two easy styles to wear.

Keep it above the ankle:  The culotte needs to hit midway between the knee and the edge of your calf. The key is to show enough leg to lengthen the body and if you need a bit of help, adding a heel always helps.

Transition to Fall:  As the weather cools, transition your culottes into fall (and even winter) fashion as you would a skirt. Add a blazer or sweater coat, layer on a poncho or a big scarf, and swap your pumps for tall boots, which will create the illusion of full-length, wide-leg pants.

Add some height:  Culottes practically demand you to wear high heels, unless you are all about making a bold fashion statement than whether or not your legs look longer than they are.  Heels elongate and define your legs with a stacked heel for extra height and an ankle strap to draw the eye.

Show off those shoes:  With their shorter hems, culottes are also the perfect silhouette of pants to show off your most fabulous shoes, as your feet will be on full display in this trouser style. Sleek and slender styles work best for elongating your legs in this length of a pant. My favorite: a pair of pointy-toe pumps with skinny heels.

What you carry matters:  When you're wearing wide bottoms, it's not the time to rock a tiny, cross-body handbag. You'll want to accessorize in a way that suits your outfit's overall proportions, by carrying a medium to large-sized purse. You can choose a handbag, over-sized leather tote or an adorned clutch, depending on the fashion vibe you're going for, whether that's flirty, boardroom-ready or modern.

Culottes can be a pretty frustrating trend to rock, but it’s worth it.  We get to step out of our comfort zones, play more with shape, finally find a great item to pair our crop tops with, and all the while look relaxed, refined, sophisticated and edgy -  depending on how we style them.
